With the unemployment rate hitting 10.2 percent last week — and it seems a lot higher than that, doesn’t it? Especially when you factor in all the folks who have had their hours slashed or their pay cut — the buzz in Washington is whether a second stimulus package is on the horizon.
We will let the politicians sort that out. Meanwhile, with New York State’s unemployment rate at 8.9 percent in September, compared to 5.8 percent the year before, there’s some help for the un- and under-employed, right here in the BK.
This week, two job fairs will set up shop in the borough, bringing booths filled with employers wanting to recruit you, the employable Brooklynite.
The first fair will be tomorrow, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Congressional Nursing Home Building at 123 Linden Boulevard.
Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke is hosting, and recruiters will include SUNY Downstate Hospital, New York Life Insurance, Non-traditional Employment for Women and an alphabet of government agencies — A.T.F., FEMA and the I.R.S.

The Revitalizing Downtown Brooklyn Career and Job Fair will take place on Thursday, Nov. 12. Organizers encourage participants to first attend a workshop for resume critique and cover letter suggestions, so call 718-289-8199 to set up an appointment.
The Resident Employment Services always provides employment help for residents at their hotline, 718-289-8100.
